A root canal is a procedure that saves and repairs a tooth that is severely decayed or infected. This treatment is necessary when the nerve (pulp) of the tooth is damaged by a deep cavity, a cracked tooth or an injury. During a root canal treatment, the inflamed or dead pulp is removed, the tooth’s canals are cleaned and finally filled with a biocompatible material.
Typical symptoms of an infected pulp can vary, but often include toothache, especially when chewing or pressing on the tooth, persistent sensitivity to heat or cold, swelling and tenderness in the surrounding gums, and a darkening of the tooth.
It’s important to remember that sometimes a tooth with a dead nerve can cause no symptoms. That’s why regular dental check-ups and x-rays are an essential part of detecting and treating these problems early.
